the orchard story

A Vision

Edward Harbes IV, one of 8 siblings, grew up on Harbes family farm.  He showed an interest in 'farming' at a young age, taking his first joy ride on a tractor at age 4 (to the terror of his watching siblings) and successfully growing his own watermelon at 5 years old from a seed collected from a slice he was eating.

Ed graduated from Cornell University in 2005 with a degree in Applied Economics and Management, and worked for a finance firm in New York City for a year before returning to the family farm to help with the growing  needs of the farm. He returned to the North Fork family farm and worked in the Harbes bookkeeping department, before moving to agricultural production manager and eventually overseeing the vineyard management, wine production, and now the entire business as Chief Executive Officer of Harbes Farm.

In 2010 Ed expressed his vision to grow apple trees on the land that is now Harbes Farm & Orchard.  With support from his father, he carefully selected the trees for purchase and researched apple growing methods and eventually ordered 5 acres of trees and decided to grow them in a high trellis system which was an innovative approach on the North Fork.

A Partner ...

The Orchard's story wouldn't be complete without Ed's wife Shannon who grew up in Westchester NY and met Ed in Cornell where she  graduated in 2007 with a degree in Biological Engineering.  She later went on to explore a teaching career and obtained a Masters in Mathematics.  Shannon's support for the Orchard vision and hard work, dedication and competence were a perfect complement to Ed's growing and technical skills.  Working alongside him she  spearheaded marketing and operations, eventually taking on management of the Wine Barn and transitioning into the COO role for Harbes Family of Farms.

A dream come true

The Orchard has now grown to 15 acres and grows 27 varieties of apples and is a wonderful complement to the Harbes fall family offering.   Thanks to his efforts, the Orchard has become one of the most popular farm offerings.   We can only wait and see if their son, Ed Harbes V will choose to surprise his parents with some tractor joy rides or growing exploits of his own someday.
